7 Days in Portugal: Alfama to Berlengas – Travel Inspiration for Maldives Tours

As a tour guide for Yeri Trips Maldives, I’m always looking for new experiences that can inspire my trips and offer fresh insights to my clients. My recent adventure through Portugal was full of beauty, culture, and history, and it sparked plenty of ideas for improving my tours in the Maldives. From the bustling streets of Lisboa to the tranquil Berlengas Island, I found inspiration everywhere. Here’s a recap of my journey through Portugal and how it has influenced my Maldives tours.

Day 1 in Lisboa: Exploring Alfama's Charm

My Portugal journey started in Lisboa, a city where history and modernity blend effortlessly. I began my day wandering the colorful streets of Santa Maria Major. These vibrant lanes, alive with art, music, and local restaurants, immediately captured my heart. As I walked past the Arco do Castelo, I made my way to the Alfama district, the oldest and most charming area of the city. The lookout of Recolhimento offered stunning panoramic views of Lisboa, setting the tone for my day of exploration.

After a busy day of walking, I enjoyed a delightful dinner in a local restaurant before heading back to my Airbnb to rest. I couldn’t wait for the adventures of the coming days.

Day 2: Lisbon’s Views and Sunset Cruise

The next day, I explored more of Lisboa’s center. One of the highlights was Largo Portas de Sol, another beautiful viewpoint where I captured pictures of the iconic trams. These charming streets and hills brought me back in time, and the scenic views were a photographer's dream.

In the evening, I treated myself to a sunset cruise in Lisboa. For just $50, I sailed along the river, watching as the city lights illuminated the night sky. The golden hues of sunset were the perfect backdrop to the city, and it gave me a new appreciation for Lisbon's beauty. I ended the day with a relaxing stroll through Praça do Comércio, a lively square filled with families and locals enjoying the atmosphere.

Day 3: Sintra and Cascais Day Trip

On day three, I was ready to leave the city and discover the surrounding areas. I rented a car and drove to Sintra and Cascais. Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its lush landscapes, palaces, and castles. I visited the iconic Pena Palace, which seemed straight out of a fairy tale. After exploring the town, I drove to Cabo de Roca, the westernmost point of Europe. The views here were breathtaking, and the rugged cliffs against the ocean reminded me of the dramatic landscapes in the Maldives.

I also took the opportunity to visit Cascais, a coastal town known for its charming vibe and beautiful beaches. Later in the day, I headed to Belém Tower, a 16th-century fortress on the Tagus River. Its historical significance and stunning architecture are a must-see when visiting Lisbon.

To cap off the day, I drove across the 25 de Abril Bridge to Almada, where I admired the views from the Cristo Rei statue. The vistas of Lisboa and the bridge, reminiscent of San Francisco’s Golden Gate, were unforgettable.

Day 4: UNESCO Heritage in Évora and Fatima Pilgrimage

Day four was filled with historical exploration. I drove to Évora, a city brimming with UNESCO-listed heritage sites. The Roman Temple, the Évora Cathedral, and the picturesque town center offered a glimpse into Portugal's rich past. As I walked through the cobblestone streets, I felt a deep connection to the country’s history.

After Évora, I drove to Ourem, a medieval town with a dramatic castle overlooking the landscape. This stop was suggested by one of my travel friends, and it didn’t disappoint. I finished the day in Fatima, a town of great religious importance. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima was serene and awe-inspiring, with many pilgrims visiting to pay homage to the Virgin Mary.

Day 5: Exploring the Beaches of Lagos and Nazare

On day five, I was ready for some beach time. I drove to Lagos, known for its stunning beaches, such as Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. I enjoyed the sun and sand before embarking on a boat trip to the famous Benagil Cave. The beauty of the caves, combined with the refreshing waters of the Atlantic Ocean, made this experience one of my highlights.

Later, I drove to Nazare, famous for having the biggest waves in the world. Although it wasn’t the season for big waves, I was still enchanted by the calm bay and scenic beauty of the town. The local food was delicious, and I enjoyed browsing through artisan stalls on the mountaintop viewpoint, where I bought two handmade ponchos.

Day 6: Berlengas Island Adventure

Day six was a true highlight of my trip. I took a 30-minute ferry ride from Peniche to Berlengas Island, a nature reserve in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This remote island is perfect for anyone looking for peace and natural beauty. I walked along the cliffs to reach the monastery, which has now been converted into a hostel. The island’s untouched beauty made it feel like a hidden gem, and I was in awe of the photos I captured.

For anyone looking to experience the tranquility of nature, Berlengas Island is a must-visit. It reminded me of the pristine and peaceful spots in the Maldives, where guests can escape to untouched landscapes.

Day 7: Return to Lisboa for Departure

On my final day in Portugal, I drove back to Lisboa for my flight to my next adventure. I had time for one last walk through the city, soaking in the views and reflecting on the incredible experiences I had over the past week.
